About the Artwork

This work begins with two opposing dots representing night (yin) and day (yang), placed between mountain peaks (yang) painted in the Korean art style ilpilhwa, or “one-stroke painting.” This meditative technique requires the painter to balance movement and stillness.

The yin and yang motif emphasizes the eternal rhythm of creation and extinction. Painted in the bottom are roses that bloom at night. Associated with renewal, these rare roses illustrate how growth can emerge from darkness. Night-blooming roses are often believed to ward off negative energy, bring luck, and reveal hidden truths. Intentional yeobaek (empty space) is left within the composition, a Korean concept that highlights the importance of openness and breathing room.

The work presents yin and yang as inseparable forces within human life and cosmic order, with the night-blooming rose serving as a metaphor for truths revealed in darkness and for the balance of opposites.
